Will my license be suspended for a DUI?

If you who are caught operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Massachusetts, you may face many different fines and punishments. This can include monetary penalties, possible prison time and a permanent criminal record. In addition to these consequences, a common penalty is a license suspension. The length of time that the license can be taken away varies depending on the number of DUI convictions you have.

Massachusetts law states that, for your first two offenses, the number of years the license will be suspended corresponds to the number of convictions. The first DUI can lead to a one year suspension, while the second can mean a license loss for two years. After the first two citations, the length of time increases dramatically.

The third offense can lead to a license suspension of eight years. The fourth conviction can result in your license being taken away for an entire decade. If you are found operating a vehicle while intoxicated for a fifth time, a judge has the power to take away driving privileges for the rest of your life.

In addition to suspensions for DUIs, you may also have your license taken away for refusing to take a breath analyzer test. The length of time that it may be suspended for depends on whether or not you have had any DUI convictions in the past. If you have already had three DUIs and then refuse to take a breathalyzer test, your license can be permanently suspended. While this information should not be taken as legal advice, it can help you understand what penalties you may be facing from a DUI conviction.
